After hours of meetings, weeks of analyzing data and markets, and months of designing concepts, RDG presented concepts and strategies for improving Detroit Lakes on Wednesday, September 24th. Where do we go from here?
During the next month, RDG will be writing a document that describes the concepts in more detail. This document will become a roadmap for implementing the downtown plan. It will include several chapters, including:
1) Markets for Detroit Lakes (projections for population, housing, retail, and office demand)
2) Existing Conditions (physical condition)
3) Strategic Planning (summary of the public's involvement)
4) A Master Plan (concepts for improving Detroit Lakes)
5) Implementation (cost estimates, funding strategies, priorities and schedule)

Designs are anticipated to be submitted by mid-July. Meanwhile, planners are preparing narrative for the final document, summarizing sections of the plan that have been previously presented to the DLDA, including the Market Analysis, Existing Conditions and Public Participation Process. A complete draft of the plan is anticipated by mid-August.

February: Completion of the Demographics and Existing Conditions Analysis, and Market Analysis. (WebEx Meeting)

March 13: Completion of the Corridor Design Workshop for review and modification of concepts.

April: Update on plan refinement. (WebEx Meeting)

May: Additional design workshop, review with DLDA.

June: No meeting (Design Team refining concept)

July: Initial presentation of development concept to DLDA.

August: Updated presentation and concept refinement to DLDA.

September: Public presentation of development concept.

October: To be determined.

What is a Design Workshop?
The design workshop encourages citizens, residents, business owners and other stakeholders with an interest in the business corridor an opportunity to share their ideas, issues and concerns informally with planners and
actively draw their concepts for the future of the corridor using markers and maps. It also provides people the opportunity to creatively think about possible solutions for the area and define a vocabulary of urban design
improvements. During the workshop, graphics and supporting illustrations are developed. This process allows the public to participate and have a chance to design the community for the future. Stop by for 15 minutes or the entire session.
