OPPORTUNITIES MAP
This map displays potential treatments for streets or corridors that we covered in the Bicycle Suitability map and present ideas and reactions that we presented to participants during the Bikeways Plan Charrettes. Categories of treatments include:
EXISTING AND FUTURE TRAILS. These include trails that are either on the ground or are either under construction or are funded for construction.
PROPOSED TRAILS. These are trails that are not programmed for short-term construction but appear to be important segments to complete an overall bikeways system.
SHOULDERS/BIKE LANES. These are streets that should have shoulders or bike lanes added to them or included when that street is widened or improved as part of Topeka’s complete streets policy. Sometimes, streets are wide enough to accommodate bike lanes (6th Avenue east is an example), or can include bike lanes as part of a lane diet project, when a street is wider than traffic volumes require.
BICYCLE BOULEVARDS. These are relatively low volume secondary streets that can be made friendly to bicycle use for a small amount of money, primarily by reducing hazards, using shared traffic markings, adding signage and route designations, and making other minor improvements. The Bicycle Boulevards would become anchors of the on-street bicycle network. In some cases, these streets jog at major street intersections, requiring care in the design of these conflict points.
SHARE THE ROAD ROUTES. These are streets of all volume categories where Share the Road signage would be posted, but the streets would not gain the principal bikeway status of Bicycle Boulevards.
SIDEPATHS are pathways along streets, generally appropriate for areas with very few driveway interruptions, such as the edge of parks, campuses, and cemeteries. Sidepaths are typically built within street right-of-ways, and require special design consideration to minimize hazards at intersections.
We would appreciate your comments on the map, particularly:
1. Suggestions of other streets or routes that you think are omitted here (this is NOT a finished product).
2. Ideas, agreements or disagreements over the type of infrastructure solution appropriate to each street.
3. Any other suggestions, comments, or ideas.
