RDG Honored with Landscape Design Awards

RDG Recognized for Energy Efficient School Design

RDG Honored with Landscape Design Awards

Two projects designed by RDG Planning & Design, recently received merit awards from the Iowa Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects. RDG is honored for their landscape design work on the Omaha South 24th Street project in a Non-Constructed category and the Iowa Interstate Railroad Bridge in Coralville in a Constructed Design Category. This program recognizes excellence in Landscape Architectural design, by selecting those projects relevant to design quality, functionality, environmental responsibility, and public relevance and welfare.

The Omaha South 24th Street project is currently in the planning and construction phase, intended to enhance the existing environment, to promote businesses and to elevate the experience of the pedestrians on South 24th. The streetscape will reflect the festive, nurturing and welcoming background of this historic and culturally unique district.

The Iowa Interstate Railroad Bridge replaces an old viaduct structure which was unsafe and unattractive. The new Bridge is both an attractive community gateway providing safe and pleasant space for pedestrian and vehicle passage, and it is an appealing architectural asset promoting the importance of transportation structures in the landscape. This project is a successful product of engineering and landscape architecture collaboration.

RDG Recognized for Energy Efficient School Design

RDG Planning & Design received MidAmerican Energy's Energy Efficiency award on two Waukee Community School projects. Both Walnut Hills Elementary and Prairieview Middle School earned a Highest Percentage of Energy Savings award. Implementation of energy saving design and construction elements resulted in $150,000 in rebates, but more importantly, annual energy savings are expected to be approximately $86,000. Estimated payback on the initial incremental cost increase is expected to be around 2-3 years.

Walnut Hills Elementary, occupied for the start of 2005 classes, is a 95,400 SF facility accommodating kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms. A strong entrance design located on the wind-protected, warm southern exposure creates street identity, while the building's orientation makes full use of optimal northern and southern exposures to give classrooms maximum natural light.

Prairieview School is a 147,476 SF facility serving a growing 8/9 middle school population. The facility is intended to stimulate student intellectual growth, classroom spaces are designed as comfortable learning environments, featuring natural lighting and energy-efficient pumps, motors, controls, chillers, and lighting.
