RDG Planning & Design Wins Regional Design Awards

The Central States Region of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) named RDG Planning & Design as recipient of two design awards, presented at their convention in Omaha, Nebraska on September 15th. The Iowa State Capitol Interior Rehabilitation received an Honor Award for Interiors, and Goodwill Industries of Omaha received a Merit Award for Architecture. These projects were recognized for excellence in design, out of 166 submittals made by design firms within the five states of the Central States Region.

Originally constructed from 1873 to 1884, the Statehouse has been a source of great pride for generations of Iowans. Following an initial study in 1981, RDG has led a series of major restoration projects for this unique building. Badly deteriorating exterior sandstone elements have either been resurfaced, or replaced with color-matched limestone. New energy-efficient wood windows duplicate the original windows, and the copper roof and skylights have been replaced. Throughout the interior of the building, major restoration has been performed, including careful re-creation of light fixtures, restoration of decorative painting and stenciling, and installation of a modern electronic voting system. “This thorough and careful restoration brings the state capitol up to current standards without compromising the integrity of the original building. The architects exhibited restraint and respect in their efforts”, stated a jury member.

The Goodwill Industries project of Omaha was designed as a re-branding of a non-profit thrift store on a very modest budget. “A dynamic glass cube entry pavilion transforms a simple warehouse structure into a beacon and a welcoming environment”, were comments made by the jury.

St. Paul Lutheran Church - Featured in National Book Publication

St Paul Lutheran Church, a rural Iowa church designed by RDG Planning & Design, is a feature project in the recently published Houses of God – Religious Architecture for a New Millennium –by noted author and architect Michael J. Crobie. This publication is a collection of an inspiring array of gathering places for communal worship, collected from the USA and abroad illustrating Michael’s continued fascination and intrigue with the subject of architecture for religion. These projects, illustrated with superb photography and detailed plans, demonstrate how architects and congregations can work together to build places that satisfy often complex cultural and personal needs.

Additional design honors for St Paul includes:
2005 Design Award, Iowa Chapter AIA
2005 Design Award – Faith and Form
2004 Honor Design Award – Central States Region AIA

This rural church structure in the small Iowa community of Winterset provides a serene place for worship. The forms are simple masses that become layered with varying textures and patterns of materials reflective of the Midwestern granary structures and the crops they contain. The building in many ways is seen as another farm structure on the edge of town forming a northwest anchor to the community. The building is layered, the building is textured, and the building is transparent in the evening when the glow and warmth of the interior spills out like the light of an Iowa barn in the evening with the farmers working inside.
