City of West Des Moines - City Hall Rehabilitation
West Des Moines, IA
Services provided on this project:
Architecture Overview:
This historic 1905 era brick storefront originally housed the Valley Junction (now West Des Moines) Fire Department and City Hall. The program included creation of a community welcome center at the street level with a multi-purpose classroom and meeting room on the second floor. Working closely with city and state authorities, the design incorporated handicapped accessible routes and accommodations throughout the building while incorporating life safety improvements. Historically significant design elements were retained, while new technology and mechanical systems were introduced. Missing historic exterior elements, such as the original fire wagon doors and roof entablature, were scheduled to be faithfully recreated, while the interior finishes would balance the new and the old, including repairs to the pressed tin ceilings.
