The goal behind the renovation and addition of Fort Calhoun Elementary School was to create new classrooms, restrooms and meeting spaces while improving the functionality and appearance of the existing spaces.

The design of the building itself took cues from two local elements; one being the nearby Fort Atkinson and the other the limestone that is mined nearby. This limestone was used to construct the armory at Fort Atkinson. Its distinctive white/cream color and visual roughness provided a perfect complement not only to the existing brick but also the wood slat accent wall that flows beneath the sloping clerestory roof.
